Preposition
আমরা জানি, Pre অর্থ পূর্বে আর position শব্দের অর্থ অবস্থান। যে শব্দ noun বা pronoun এর পূর্বে বসে ঐ noun বা pronoun এর সঙ্গে বাক্যের অন্য word এর সাথে সম্পর্ক তৈরি করে তাকে preposition বলা হয়। সুতরাং preposition বাক্যে সেতুবন্ধক হিসেবে কাজ করে। কিছু preposition এর উদাহরণ:

কিছু Preposition এর সংক্ষিপ্ত ব্যবহার নিচে দেয়া হল। অন্য কোন অধ্যায়ে preposition এর ব্যবহার বিস্তারিতভাবে আলোচনা করা হবে ইন-শা-আল্লাহ।
At, in এর ব্যাবহার:
আমরা আলমবাগে বসবাস করে- We live at Alambagh.
আমরা ঢাকায় থাকি–We live in Dhaka.
Note: ছোট স্থানের আগে at এবং বড় স্থানের আগে in বসে।
To, in, into এর ব্যবহার:
সে মাদরাসায় যাচ্ছে- He is going to madrasah.
আমরা মাদরাসায় আছি- We are in the madrasah.
On, over, above এর ব্যাবহার:
মোবাইলটি টেবিলের উপর আছে- The mobile is on the table.
পখিটি তার মাথার উাপর ঘুরছে- The fan is moving over his head.
আকাশ আমাদের মাথার উপরে- The sky is above our head.
By, with এর ব্যাবহার:
আমি তাকে কান ধরে টেনেছিলাম- I pulled him by the ear।
সে আমার সাথে আছি- He is with me.
Beside, besides এর ব্যাবহার:
গাছটির পাশেই আমার বাড়ি- My house is beside the tree.
সে বাংলা ও ইংরেজি জানে- He knows English besides Bengali.
Between, among এর ব্যাবহার:
দুই ভইয়ের মধ্যে আমগুলো ভাগ করে দাও- Divide the mangoes between the two brothers.
ছেলেদের মধ্যে আমগুলি ভাগ করে দাও-divide the managoes among the boys.
গঠন ও কাজের ভিত্তিতে Preposition কে ৬ ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়েছে। যেমন:

6. Disguised Preposition
1. Simple Preposition: যেসকল Preposition শুধুমাত্র একটি Word দ্বারা গঠিত, তাকে Simple Preposition বলে। যেমন:
He is at home.
We are in the room.
Simple Prepositions: At, in, by, of, to, under, with, up, out, over, down , on, for, against, from, upon, off, after, till etc.
2. Double Preposition: দুটি preposition যুক্ত হয়ে যখন একটি নতুন preposition গঠিত হয়, তাকে double preposition বলে। যেমন:
Don’t walk in the dark without a torchlight.
The water rose upto the knee.
Double Prepositions: Upon, into, onto, out of, within, without, next to, up to, off to, off on, throughout etc.
3. Compound Preposition: যেসকল Preposition দুই বা ততোধিক Word দ্বারা গঠিত হয়, তাকে Compound Preposition বলে। এধরনের preposition সাধারণত noun, pronoun বা adverb এর পূর্বে simple preposition যুক্ত হয়ে গঠিত হয়। যেমন:
He is hiding behind the tree.
The man is waiting outside.

4. Phrase Preposition: যেসকল Phrase বাক্যের মধ্যে Preposition হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাকে Phrase Preposition বলে। যেমন:
He didn’t go to class on account of illness.
I bought a mobile phone in lieu of a laptop.

5. Participle Preposition: যেসকল present বা past participle বাক্যের মধ্যে বসে preposition–এর কাজ করে, তাকে participle preposition বলে। যেমন:
I know nothing regarding the issue.
Do according to what I say.

6. Disguised Preposition: যেসকল preposition বাক্যের মধ্যে ছদ্মবেশে থাকে, তাকে disguised preposition বলে। সাধারণত on এবং of এধরনের preposition-এর উদাহরণ। on এবং of এর পরিবর্তে ‘a’ ‘o’ ব্যবহৃত হয়, তখন এদেরকে disguised preposition বলা হয়। যেমন:
I went a (on) shopping.
It is five o’clock. (of clock)

Appropriate Preposition: ইংরেজি গ্রামারের নিয়ম অনুযায়ী কিছু শব্দের পর কিছু নির্দষ্ট preposition বসে। এগুলোকে appropriate preposition বলে। এগুলো মনে রাখা ছাড়া ভিন্ন কোন উপায় নেই। যেমন:
Abide by (মেনে চলা)- We all should abide by the traffic rules.
Access to (প্রবেশ অধিকার)- I don’t have access to his computer.
According to (অনুসারে)- I did everything according to his instructions.
Addicted to (আসক্ত)- He is addicted to smoking.
Warn of (সতর্ক করা)- I warned him of the danger.
