Rules of Prepositions
এর আগের অধ্যায়ে আমরা preposition এর প্রকারভেদ সম্পর্কে জেনেছিলাম। এই অধ্যায়ে আমরা preposition এর বিস্তারিত ব্যবহার সম্পর্কে জানব ইন-শা-আল্লাহ। আমরা সবাই জানি যে, ইংরেজি গ্রামারে preposition একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়। আমরা যদি Preposition এর ব্যবহারগুলো ভালভাবে আয়ত্ত করে নিতে পারি, তাহলে ইংরেজিতে বাক্য গঠন করা আমাদের জন্য অনেক সহজ হয়ে যাবে। তাহলে চল এবার বিভিন্ন প্রকার preposition এর ব্যবহার সম্পর্কে জানা যাক।
To এর ব্যবহার
1. কোন স্থানে আসা এবং যাওয়া বুঝালে ঐ স্থানের আগে to বসে। যেমন:
i. He goes to madrasah every day.
ii. He came to Somonia Madrasah in 2022.
বি:দ্র: আসা এবং যাওয়া বুঝালেও home, abroad, here, there এর আগে to বসে না।
ব্যতিক্রম: From here to there.
2. ব্যক্তির কাছে বুঝালে তার আগে to বসে। যেমন: He came to me.
3. অনুসারে বুঝাতে to বসে। যেমন: He cooked the food to my instruction.
4. সীমানার বাইরে বুঝাতে to বসে। যেমন: Japan is to the east of our country.
5. পর্যন্ত বুঝাতে to বসে। যেমন: We watched the match to the end.

In এর ব্যবহার
1. কোন বিষয় বা ভাষায় বুঝালে তার আগে in বসে। যেমন: in English, in Accounting, in Arabic.
2. বড় স্থান বুঝাতে in বসে। যেমন: We live in Dhaka.
3.সময়ের ক্ষেত্রে (মাস /বছর/ঋতুর নাম) বুঝাতে in বসে। যেমন: He will come in 2025.
4. ক্ষেত্র বুঝাতে in বসে। যেমন: In this regard, I know nothing.
5. অবস্থা বুঝাতে in বসে। যেমন: The shop is in a good position.
6. বিবেচনা বুঝাতে in বসে। যেমন: You have to do it in your own interest.
7. মাধ্যম বুঝাতে in বসে। যেমন: You have to pay the bill in cash.
8. অনুপাতের ক্ষেত্র বুঝাতে in বসে। যেমন: In England, one in three enters higher education.

At এর ব্যবহার
1. অবস্থান বুঝাতে নাম উল্লেখিত ছোট স্থানের আগে, যেমন: গ্রাম, এলাকা, মহল্লা ও ছোট শহরের আগে at বসে। যেমন: At Jurain, at Alambagh
2. সময় বুঝাতে at বসে। যেমন: Come tomorrow at 5:00 pm.
3. অবস্থা বুঝাতে at বসে। যেমন: He is at rest now.
4. হার/গতি বুঝাতে at বসে। যেমন: Iffat was driving the car at 100 kilometers per hour.
5. দায়িত্ব বুঝাতে at বসে। যেমন: You must repair it at your own cost.
6. দূরত্ব বুঝাতে at বসে। যেমন: Jatrabari is at 3 kilometers from Alambagh.
7. বয়স বুঝাতে at বসে। যেমন: I was in London at 5.
9. দিক বুঝাতে at বসে। যেমন: He pointed the gun at him.

For এর ব্যবহার
1. সময়ের আগে ধরে /যাবৎ ইত্যাদি বুঝাতে for বসে। যেমন: Rihan has been reading the book for one hour.
2. জন্য বুঝাতে for বসে। যেমন: What can I do for you?
3. সাহায্য করা অর্থে for ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: Can you do it for me?
4. কারণ বুঝাতে for বসে। যেমন: Chittagong is famous for Cox’s Bazar sea beach.
5. সমর্থন/পক্ষে বুঝাতে for বসে। যেমন: I am for you.
6. মূল্য বুঝাতে for বসে। যেমন: He bought the bag for 500 taka.
7. বিনিময় বুঝাতে for বসে। যেমন: You will get a coupon for every 100 taka you pay.

From এর ব্যবহার
1. কারো নিকট হইতে অথবা কোন স্থান হইতে বুঝাইলে from বসে। যেমন:
i. He came from London.
ii. Take some money from him.

Of এর ব্যবহার
1. সম্পর্ক বুঝাতে of বসে। যেমন: They know nothing of the accident.
2. অধিকার/মালিকানা বুঝাতে of বসে। যেমন: The car is of Mr. Habib.
3. উৎপন্ন/উদ্ভুত অর্থ বুঝাতে of বসে। যেমন: He comes of a noble family.
4. উপকরণ বুঝাতে of বসে। যেমন: The mobile is made of plastic.
5. কারণ বুঝাতে of বসে। যেমন: He died of cholera.

On এর ব্যবহার
1. নদীর তীরে বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: Somonia Madrasah is on the Buriganga.
2. কোন কিছুর উপরে সংলগ্ন বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: The cat is on the table.
3. Floor এর সংখ্যা বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: Our office is on the 3rd floor.
4. সীমানার উপর বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: The Buriganga is on the south of Dhaka.
5. বার/তারিখের পূর্বে এবং দিবসের আগে বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: I will come on Monday on the 21st February.
6. সম্বন্ধে বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: I wrote a book on militancy.
7. নির্ভরতা বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: The cow lives on grass.
8. অনুসারে বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: We arranged everything on his direction.
9. সময়ের বর্ণনা বুঝাতে on বসে। যেমন: The river looks beautiful on a moonlit night.
10. উপলক্ষ বুঝাতে on ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: He gifted me a smart watch on my birthday.
নিচের শব্দ গুলোর পর on বসে:

By এর ব্যবহার
1. কোন উপায় বা পদ্বতির মাধ্যমে বুঝাতে তার আগে by বসে। যেমন: By studying hard, he got A+.
2. পাশে বুঝাতে by বসে। যেমন: I stood by him.
3. মাধ্যম বুঝাতে by বসে। যেমন: I became successful by patience.
4. শপথ নেয়া বুঝাতে by বসে। যেমন: He swore by Allah.
5. Passive voice-এ by বসে। যেমন: The book was written by me.
6. পরিমাপ বুঝাতে by বসে। যেমন: The room is 12 feet by 10 feet.
7. নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের মধ্যে বুঝাতে by বসে। যেমন: I will meet him by 7:00 pm.
8. যানবাহনে ভ্রমণ বুঝাতে by বসে। যেমন: I travelled to Sylhet by train.

With এর ব্যবহার
1. সাথে বুঝাতে with বসে। যেমন: Abdullah came with me.
2. দ্বারা/দিয়া বুঝাতে with বসে। যেমন: I hit the dog with a stone.
3. সত্বেও বুঝাতে with ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: With my prohibition, he killed the bird.
4. বিরুদ্ধে বুঝাতে with ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: He had a fight with his brother.
নিচের শব্দ গুলোর পর with বসে:

Off এর ব্যবহার
1. নির্দিষ্ট স্থান থেকে দূরে কিংবা সময়ের ব্যবধান বুঝাতে off ব্যবহূত হয়। যেমন:
(a) I called him but he ran off.
(b) His arrival at the airport is not far off.
2. কোনো কিছু দূরীভূত হয়েছে বুঝাতে off ব্যবহূত হয়। যেমন:
(a) He took his shoes off.
(b) Despite all obstacles, he did not have his beard shaved off.
3. বন্ধ কিংবা বাতিল বুঝাতে off ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
i. The shop is off now.
ii. The meeting was called off.
4. কর্ম থেকে দূরে বা ছুটি বুঝাতে off ব্যবহূত হয়। যেমন:
(a) Mr. Mukim is off today.
(b) We have two days off next week.
Into এর ব্যবহার
1. গতি বুঝাতে into বসে। যেমন: I entered into the room.
2. অবস্থার পরিবর্তন বুঝাতে into বসে। যেমন: The ice is changed into water.
3. সংঘর্ষ বুঝাতে into বসে। যেমন: The car crashed into a bike.
4. সংখ্যায় ভাগ হওয়া বুঝাতে into বসে। যেমন: The players were divided into three teams.
Above এর ব্যবহার
1. উপরে বুঝাতে above বসে। যেমন: The water came above our knees.
2. অবস্থান বুঝাতে above বসে। যেমন: The sky is above our head.
3. পরিমাণে বুঝাতে above বসে। যেমন: The temperature is above average today.
4. এতটাই সৎ/ভালো বুঝাতে above বসে। যেমন: Pavel is above suspicion.
About এর ব্যবহার
1. সম্পর্কে/বিষয়ে বুঝাতে about বসে। যেমন: I knew something about it.
2. চারদিকে বুঝাতে about বসে। যেমন: I travelled around Jurain.
3. উপলক্ষ বুঝাতে about বসে। যেমন: Samir invited me about his sister’s marriage.
4. প্রায়/কাছাকাছি বুঝাতে about বসে। যেমন: I was about to die.
After এর ব্যবহার
1. পরে বুঝাতে after বসে। যেমন: I came after my brother.
2. অনুসারে বুঝাতে after বসে। যেমন: The room has been decorated after my choice.
3. পিছনে পিছনে বুঝাতে after বসে। যেমন: I ran after the thief.
4. মোটের উপর বুঝাতে after বসে। যেমন: After all, he is a good boy.
5. বিপরিত ঘটনা বুঝাতে after বসে। যেমন: The house is pleasantly cool after the extreme heat outside.
Before এর ব্যবহার
1. পূর্বে বুঝাতে before বসে। যেমন: He came before lunch.
2. সম্মুখে/সামনে বুঝাতে before বসে। যেমন: He stood before me.
3. তূলনামূলকভাবে আগে/বিশেষ গুরুত্ব বুঝাতে before বসে। যেমন: He puts his work before everything.
Among এর ব্যবহার
1. কিছুর মধ্যে (চারদিক বেষ্টিত) বুঝাতে among বসে। যেমন: There is a tiger among the trees.
2. দু’য়ের অধিকের মধ্যে বুঝাতে among বসে। যেমন: Who is Araf among you?
Within এর ব্যবহার
1. সময়ের মধ্যে বুঝাতে within বসে। যেমন: I will see you within next five minutes.
2. সামর্থ্যের মধ্যে বুঝাতে within বসে। যেমন: You should do everything within your means.
Over এর ব্যবহার
1. উপর বুঝাতে over বসে। যেমন: The fan is over our head.
2. সমগ্র/সারা অর্থ বুঝাতে over বসে। যেমন: I have traveled over Dhaka.
3. বিপরীত পাশ বুঝাতে over বসে। যেমন: My place is over the road.
4. অধিক বুঝাতে over বসে। যেমন: I was in Australia over a year.
5. উপরস্থ কর্মকর্তা বুঝাতে over বসে। যেমন: He has a director over him.
6. মাধ্যম বুঝাতে over বসে। যেমন: I talked to him over telephone.
Under এর ব্যবহার
1. নিচে বুঝাতে under বসে। যেমন: The cat is under the bed.
2. ছোট/কম পরিমাণ/বয়স বুঝাতে under বসে। যেমন:
i. He is under 18.
ii. I earn under 10000.
3. অধীনে অর্থ বুঝাতে under বসে। যেমন: He is under me.
4. অবস্থা বুঝাতে under বসে। যেমন: The criminal is under sentence to death.
Between এর ব্যবহার
1. দুইয়ের মধ্যে বুঝাতে between ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: I picked the red one between the two colors.
Without এর ব্যবহার
1.ছাড়া অর্থ বুঝাতে without ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: We cannot cook without oil.
Beyond এর ব্যবহার
1. পিছনে/অপরদিক অর্থ বুঝাতে beyond বসে। যেমন: Our village is beyond the hill.
2. সময়ের পরে বুঝাতে beyond বসে। যেমন: The program will not continue beyond 10:00 pm.
3. সাধ্যের বা আয়ত্তের বাইরে বুঝাতে beyond বসে। যেমন: Buying the house is beyond my ability.
Since এর ব্যবহার
1. হতে/থেকে অর্থে point of time এর পূর্বে since বসে। যেমন: since 2005, since Monday, since January.
Beside এর ব্যবহার
1. পাশে বুঝাতে by এর মত beside বসে। যেমন: He stood beside me.
2. অপ্রাসঙ্গিক বুঝাতে beside ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: Your logic is beside his evidence.
3. পাশাপাশি/ছাড়াও বুঝাতে beside ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: He learns Arabic beside English.
Through এর ব্যবহার
1. ভিতর/মধ্য দিয়ে বুঝাতে through বসে। যেমন: We walked through the deep forest.
2. পর্যন্ত বুঝাতে through ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: Somonia Madrasah is open Saturday through Thrusday. (Used in American English only)
Across এর ব্যবহার
1. আড়াআড়ি ভাবে/অপর পার্শ্বে বুঝাতে across বসে। যেমন: Somonia Madarsah is across ABS Steel Mill.
Below এর ব্যবহার
1. নিম্নে বর্ণিত, নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ বা সংখ্যায় কম,পর্যায়ে নিচে বুঝাতে below বসে। যেমন:
i. My details are given below.
ii. Jihan got below 80% marks.
Down এর ব্যবহার
1. উপর থেকে নিচের দিকে বুঝাতে down বসে। যেমন: The child fell down from the roof.
2. বরাবর বুঝাতে down বসে। যেমন: Go down the road to get to Alambagh.
Up এর ব্যবহার
1. নিচ থেকে উপরের দিকে বুঝাতে up বসে। যেমন: Go up the hill.
Besides এর ব্যবহার
1. এছাড়াও বুঝাতে besides বসে। যেমন: I sell cold pressed mustard oil besides honey, ghee.
Preposition এর আরো কিছু ব্যবহার:
Aboard (জাহাজের উপরে বা মধ্যে বুঝাতে বসে): They are aboard the ship.
Around (সবদিকে) We walked around Gulisthan.
As (যেভাবে/মত/হিসেবে) He respect me as a senior.
Amid/amidst (মধ্যে/ভিতরে/মাঝখানে) The moon shines amid thousands of stars.
Amongst (মধ্যে): He was not seen clearly among/amongst thousands of people.
Astride (দুই পা দুই দিকে ঝুলিয়ে রাখা বুঝালে): The boy is sitting astride his father’s shoulder
Beneath (নিচে): The ground beneath my feet started to shake.
Bar/barring (ছাড়া): Barring any problem, we should reach there.
Notwithstanding (সত্বেও): Notwithstanding illness, he went to madrasah.
Round (চারদিকে): The earth moves round the sun.
Throughout (আদ্যেপান্ত): The Eid day is celebrated throughout the country.
Unlike (মত নয় বা অন্যরকম বা ভিন্ন): My habit is unlike yours.
By (হিসেবে): Hire a car by the hour.
Concerning (সম্পর্কে): I hardly know concerning the issue.
Despite (সত্বেও): He went there despite my prohibition.
During (যাবৎ/ব্যাপী/কোন সময় বা স্থিতিকাল ধরে): During winter, I usually stay in Cox’s Bazar.
Except/excepting (বাদে): We all except Tahsan are going to Sylhet.
By (অনুসারে): It is 8 o’clock by my watch
Including (সহ): The cost is 500 take including vat.
Excluding (বাদে): The cost is 500 taka excluding vat.
